about us The Medical Spa at Nova

Nova Medical Group offers personalized medical care, and thorough evaluations that are medically sound and scientifically accurate. Nova remains committed to the standard western approach to evaluating and diagnosing a patient, while offering complementary medicine modalities by highly trained and certified providers. In addition to managing acute medical illnesses, Nova focuses on the long term effect of therapy and includes an extensive battery of screening and preventative tests to optimize wellness and enhance the ability to counteract the effects of aging.

Nova Medical Group offers a wide variety of services for patients of all ages including pediatric care. Our conventional medical providers include board certified internal medicine and family practice specialists, nurses and nurse practitioners. Our services by board certified physicians and medical providers include a comprehensive array of conventional medical evaluations including cardiovascular stress testing, on site laboratory, pulmonary function testing and comprehensive medical evaluations. The following ancillary disciplines are well represented; osteopathic medicine and manipulation, naturopathic and oriental medicine, registered dietician, clinical nutritionist, clinical social worker, cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, acupuncture, aesthetic care, laser hair removal, massage therapy, certified personal trainers and yoga instructors.

Nova patients have the opportunity to experience the benefits of complementary medicine without foregoing traditional conventional medical evaluations and oversight. Our entire team documents in the same chart. While modern conventional medicine focuses on the treatment of specific illnesses, complementary medicine including naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and oriental medicine expands the therapeutic approaches available to each patient. Over the centuries, different cultures have developed unique approaches to evaluating and treating illness. Modern conventional medicine is based upon principles of surgery and bio-medicine with a strong emphasis on drugs founded and marketed by large pharmaceutical companies. Oriental medicine is rooted in the theory and practice of acupuncture, energy meridians and herbalism. Many of the agents marketed and sold by pharmaceutical companies are chemically similar to herbal products. Not surprising, many human beings better tolerate a more natural approach. Complementary medicine provides this added dimension. This form of integrative medicine helps patients achieve specific goals by combining various complementary services such as acupuncture, botanical medicine, nutritional consulting, integrated lifestyle counseling, and naturopathic care with conventional medical treatment.

At Nova Medical Group, our patients are seen by appointment for routine care. Should an urgent problem arise, medical attention is close by at our affiliate, Nova Urgent Care. Nova Medical Group patient records are accessible to the Urgent Care facility, providing greater continuity of care. Same day appointments are accommodated at Nova.

Nova began as a sole proprietorship founded by Grace L. Keenan, MD in 1988, in the Countryside development in Sterling, VA. Rapid growth necessitated a move to Route 7 and Palisades Parkway in 1991, and the establishment of Nova Urgent Care, the practice’s first Urgent Care facility.

Patients? needs for less expensive and more efficient alternatives to the ER for non-life threatening illnesses are addressed in this and three other Nova urgent care facilities. Nova has grown to become the largest primary care practice in Loudoun County.

Optimal Health Philosophy

Nova shifts the focus of medicine from a reactive illness based practice to proactive, preventative healthcare. Eighty percent of medical illnesses are related to stress. Nova creates customized solutions through extensive medical, nutritional, fitness and stress impact evaluations and provide assessments and ongoing follow up to ensure lifestyle changes. Living longer is not the same as living healthy. The World Health Organization states that the average life expectancy is now 77 years, yet the average years for expected healthy living is 67.6 years. Nova emphasizes approaching the patient in a manner that optimizes health and thus closes this gap. Nova offers expanded laboratory testing to aid in identifying those at increased risk of age related diseases and conditions and help prevent the onset of such conditions as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and osteoporosis, to name a few.

A customized health solution is created based on results of laboratory and radiologic testing including hormone balance, renal, liver function and lipid panels, environmental exposure panel, body composition, cognitive function, assessment of body composition, sexual health, stress levels, strength and endurance and the most current imaging including cardiac calcium scoring. The Nova executive health program includes three levels of evaluations. Regardless of whether or not you choose such approach, all patients at Nova have access to these tests and services.

The Medical Spa at Nova contains a body movement room whereby certified personal trainers craft an individualized exercise program, prescribing a balanced approach to health and fitness. Flexibility, balance, body fat composition, basal metabolic rate, cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance all factor into the equation of optimizing your health. Working with our dietician, naturopathic physician and cognitive behavioral therapist, a team approach gives rise to the fitness and nutrition, mind body medicine and weight loss programs, tailored to create results for you. In addition to the routine spa services, including facials, body treatments, laser hair removal, BOTOX™ and Restylane®, and massage, The Medical Spa at Nova provides advanced techniques in lymphatic drainage, hydrotherapy and infra red sauna detoxification protocols.

Custom compounded prescriptions including bio-identical hormone therapy, vitamins and supplements and prescription drugs are prescribed as deemed most appropriate for you. The expanded therapeutic options aid in enhancing results to Nova patients.
