While many of us have heard the term ‘BOTOX®‘ and may have even experienced the treatment, how much about the world of BOTOX do we really know as consumers? There’s more to BOTOX than just being a go-to for wrinkles and we want to empower you to know about the wide benefits and science behind it.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX is derived from Clostridium Botulinum and is clinically referred to as Botulinum toxin. Don’t let the word ‘toxin’ scare you! It has been specially formulated in a lab for safety in cosmetic and medical use. BOTOX comes in the form of a fine powder, mixed with saline, and is then carefully injected into the skin. The product works by limiting muscle movement, therefore inherently softening lines caused by the original muscle movement. This quick and non-surgical treatment can last an average of three to four months.
Why is it used?
While BOTOX is widely known for its aesthetic uses to help minimize dynamic wrinkles on the face, it is not as widely known by the public for its medical uses. BOTOX has been especially successful in the treatment of migraine headaches, muscle spasms, some urinary and bowel disorders and hyperhidrosis (sweating).
I want BOTOX®. What should I do?
First, know who is performing your treatment. Make sure that you have a reputable provider who has experience in plastic surgery or preferably, is board certified in dermatology, plastic surgery or medical aesthetics. The expertise of your provider is extremely important as the technique and skill is what makes the ultimate difference. Second, know what’s being injected. It’s very important to know that you are receiving legitimate pharmaceuticals; as imitations may cause irritation and permanent damage.
Our Physician Assistant, Danielle Augustino, who sees clients out of our Ashburn location, likes to share with her patients that, “BOTOX is meant to give a natural appearance or a younger version of ‘you.’” She finds that this often helps new guests that have the misconception of looking bizarre after seeing celebrities on television or in magazines.
